Transcript: Why Study the Bible?

Presenter: From the moment we can talk, we ask questions.
[Grandfather teaches grandson to fish]
Why is the sky blue? What are the stars made of?
[Father and daughter observing the stars]
Why do bad things happen?
[Distressed family at father’s hospital bedside]
Where do we come from?
[Teacher presents evolution on a blackboard]
Why do people die?
[Mother and child at gravestone. Rocket takes off]
People go to great lengths to find answers.
[The mars robot]
Today, there is more information available than ever before.
[Hand holds phone streaming internet]
But the big questions, questions about life,
suffering, and death, still remain.
[Homelessness, hungry children, destruction]
Where can we find answers?
[A woman sits at her computer then glances at her bookshelf]
What if the answers have been there all along in the Bible?
[She takes the Bible off the shelf and leafs through the pages]
A lot of people say, the Bible is full of myths and legends.
[Moses parts the red sea]
That it’s outdated.
[Woman reads in horse drawn buggy]
Or it’s just too hard to understand.
[Frustrated man tries to read the Bible]
But is the Bible really the problem,
[then removes his glasses]
or is it what people think they know about the Bible?
[People with divergent ideas]
People think the Bible says that God controls the world.
[Hand holds the earth]
But how could that be? This world is out of control!
[Protesters struggle with riot police]
It’s full of pain and suffering,
[Grieving woman cries over empty crib]
sickness and death,
[In pain an old man sits in hospital hallway]
poverty and disaster.
[Woman holds dead child]
How could a loving God be responsible for all of this?
[A Bible opens]
What the Bible says may surprise you.
[And pages begin flipping]
It says: “The Evil One controls the whole world.
[Devil conspiring]
In other words, there’s an evil power behind the world’s problems, someone who’s pulling the strings behind the scenes.
[Religion, politics, angry protestors]
That’s why, no matter how hard we try,
[Man with a pained look]
humans just cannot solve the world’s problems. The good news is: The Bible says things will not always be like this!
[Girl smiles as plant blooms]
It tells us why we’re in this situation,
[Bible opens]
how God will fix it, and how we can deal with it in the meantime.
[People of all ages, genders]
The Bible is providing answers to life’s big questions for millions of people around the world.
[and ethnicities]
