Lesson 46 Why Make a Dedication and Get Baptized?

[Image:] A man praying alone.
You dedicate yourself to Jehovah by promising him in a prayer that you will worship only him and put his will first in your life. (Psalm 40:8)
[Quotation] Psalm 40:8: To do your will, O my God, is my delight, And your law is deep within me. [End Quotation]
Afterward, you get baptized. By doing so, you show others that you have made a dedication. The decision to dedicate ourselves to Jehovah is the most important one we will ever make. What may motivate you to make such a serious and life-changing decision?
1. What motivates someone to make a dedication?
Our dedication to Jehovah is motivated by love. (1 John 4:10, 19)
[Quotation] 1 John 4:10: The love is in this respect, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins. [End Quotation]
[Quotation] 1 John 4:19: We love, because he first loved us. [End Quotation]
The Bible urges us: “Love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind and with your whole strength.” (Mark 12:30) We show that we love God not only by what we say but also by what we do. Just as a couple who truly love each other get married, so our love for Jehovah motivates us to dedicate ourselves to him and get baptized.
2. What blessings does Jehovah offer to his baptized Witnesses?
When you get baptized, you will become a member of Jehovah’s happy family. You will then experience his love for you in many ways, and you will draw even closer to him than you are today. (Read Malachi 3:16 through 18.) In addition to having Jehovah as your Father, you will have a spiritual family of brothers and sisters around the world who love him and love you. (Read Mark 10:29 and 30.) Of course, you must take certain steps before you get baptized. You need to learn about Jehovah, to love him, and to put faith in his Son. Finally, you must dedicate your life to Jehovah. If you take those steps and then get baptized, you will be on the path to enjoying life forever. God’s Word says: “Baptism . . . is also now saving you.” (1 Peter 3:21)
[Quotation] 1 Peter 3:21: Baptism, which corresponds to this, is also now saving you (not by the removing of the filth of the flesh, but by the request to God for a good conscience), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. [End Quotation]
[Read scripture] Malachi 3:16 through 18: At that time those who fear Jehovah spoke with one another, each one with his companion, and Jehovah kept paying attention and listening. And a book of remembrance was written before him for those fearing Jehovah and for those meditating on his name. “And they will be mine,” says Jehovah of armies, “in the day when I produce a special property. I will show them compassion, just as a man shows compassion to his son who serves him. And you will again see the distinction between a righteous person and a wicked person, between one serving God and one not serving him.” [End of Read scripture]
[Read scripture] Mark10:29 and 30: Jesus said: “Truly I say to you, no one has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the good news who will not get 100 times more now in this period of time, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, with persecutions, and in the coming system of things, everlasting life. [End of Read scripture]

Examine why it is important for you to make a dedication to Jehovah and get baptized.
3. We all must choose whom we will serve
In ancient Israel, some people thought that they could worship both Jehovah and the false god Baal. But Jehovah sent his prophet Elijah to correct this wrong idea. Read 1 Kings 18:21, and then discuss the question that follows:
[Read scripture] 1 Kings 18:21: Then Elijah approached all the people and said: “How long will you be limping between two different opinions? If Jehovah is the true God, follow him; but if Baal is, follow him!” But the people did not say a word in answer to him. [End of Read scripture]
What choice did the Israelites have to make?
Like the Israelites, we too must choose whom we will serve. Read Luke 16:13, and then discuss the questions that follows:
[Read scripture] Luke 16:13: No servant can be a slave to two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stick to the one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves to God and to Riches.” [End of Read scripture]
Why can we not worship both Jehovah and someone or something else?
How do we show Jehovah that we choose to worship him?

[Text: Samuel F. Herd. Governing Body]
Samuel F. Herd: This month I’d like to talk about Presenting Your Gifts to God. We certainly have every reason to consider this topic. Well, why is that? It’s because Jehovah gives us so much. James 1:17 says: Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, coming down from the Father of the celestial lights. For example, Jehovah allows us to enjoy the gift of life,
[Mom and Baby smile]
even though our first parents tried to take that from us. He’s provided us with a variety of foods.
[Various vegetables on a table]
The environment is just right to support life.
[A lake surrounded by mountains]
He’s given us his precious Word, the Bible, so that we can come to know him
[Boy smiling holding a Bible]
and his purposes. And the greatest perfect present Jehovah has given us is the ransom.
[Jesus on the stake]
Jehovah sacrificed a great deal to arrange for Jesus to buy back for us the hope of everlasting life. This was at no obligation on Jehovah’s part. It was totally a gift of love. Please read with me 1 John 4:9: By this the love of God was revealed in our case, that God sent his only begotten Son into the world so that we might gain life through him. What a gift of love from Jehovah, our God! What does that move us to do? Maybe you’ve had the experience of a close friend or family member unexpectedly giving you a valuable gift. Immediately, what are you thinking? You are probably trying to think of what you can give in return. How much more so would we want to ‘present our gifts to God’ so as to show our sincere appreciation for all he’s done! Let’s consider some possible gifts that Jehovah would be pleased to receive from us.
[Woman in baptism pool]
Many of you in our viewing audience have been moved to give your life to Jehovah, dedicating yourself to do his will. That’s commendable! That’s what Romans 12 urges us to do. However, there are some of you listening who have thought about this way of giving back to Jehovah, but you haven’t yet taken this vital step. Notice the appeal the apostle Paul makes at Romans 12:1: Therefore, I appeal to you by the compassions of God, brothers, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, a sacred service with your power of reason. Your life is precious. Presenting your body, your whole soul, to God is one of the best gifts you can give to him.

What are some ways in which Jehovah has shown love to you? Read Psalm 104:14 and 15 and 1 John 4:9 and 10, and then discuss the questions that follow:
[Read scripture] Psalm 104:14, 15: He is making grass grow for the cattle And vegetation for mankind’s use, To grow food from the land And wine that makes man’s heart rejoice, Oil that makes the face shine, And bread that sustains the heart of mortal man. [End of Read scripture]
[Read scripture] 1 John 4:9, 10: By this the love of God was revealed in our case, that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might gain life through him. The love is in this respect, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins. [End of Read scripture]
What gifts from Jehovah are you especially grateful for?
How do those gifts make you feel about him?
When we receive a gift that we really like, we want to show appreciation to the one who gave it to us. Read Deuteronomy 16:17, and then discuss the question that follows:
[Read scripture] Deuteronomy 16:17: The gift that each one brings should be in proportion to the blessing that Jehovah your God has given you. [End of Read scripture]
When you consider everything that Jehovah has done for you, what are you moved to give to him?

5. Dedication brings many blessings
Many people believe that fame, a good career, or money will make them happy. Is that true? Play the video Soccer Was My Reason for Living (5:45), and then discuss the questions that follow.

[Andrey Nesmachniy wearing a navy suit he walks into an empty soccer stadium]
Andrey: Soccer was my reason for living. I always dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player.
[Imagines an enthusiastic crowd waving flags surrounding an energic soccer game]
I thought that happiness came from fame,
[In uniform, places his foot on a soccer ball and spotlighted]
a good career,
[Actual footage of Andrey scoring a goal]
money. When I was six, my parents signed me up for soccer.
[Children playing]
I really loved playing soccer. I spent all my time at the stadium, even late into the night.
[In the ministry with his mother]
When I was 12, I learned about Jehovah from my mom. At that time, she started studying the Bible. And after about a year, I began to preach from door to door.
[Hands brochure to a woman]
When I was 17 years old, I finished school and I received an invitation from the Dynamo Soccer Club in Kiev.
[Walks through stadium]
Oh, that was unforgettable!
[A glittering trophy]
Yes, my emotions were running high because since childhood I had always dreamed of playing for Dynamo.
[Grass bursts into the air with a powerful running kick, soccer ball flies into the net, fans cheer]
From that moment on, all my energy and all my time were devoted to my career.
[Skilfully dribbles around opponent, aerial view of players and long kicks]
Every day we either trained or there was a game.
[Intense practise drills and games. A low view shows a soccer ball rolling up and a foot stopping it in place]
There was no time left for spiritual things.
[Andrey sits in a bleacher chair]
Of course, being around people like that, I became just like them.
[Wearing shades, he puts his soccer bag in the back of a sports car]
I led an immoral lifestyle because huge amounts of money opened up many opportunities.
[Peels out. Upscale club]
Going to nightclubs,
[Tall beers]
the nightlife—it was so immoral.
[Hands up dancing with girls]
Everyone wants to be your friend and to meet you. And, of course, this was tempting.
[In slow motion a group clinks glasses together. Back at the stadium Andrey stands up]
I also invested huge sums of money in real estate. I wanted to create a foundation for the future and wealth for myself, my family, and my relatives so that no one would be in need.
[Tall city buildings]
Yes, I was sure that this really was happiness. This continued for nine years. The turning point was a conversation with management when an issue came up,
[In the stadium he walks]
and they hurled insults at me.
[Picks up paper cup]
At that moment, I felt worthless, like a disposable cup that you use and then crush and throw away.
[Squeezes cup in his fist]
Besides, a new generation of soccer players was arriving, many young guys. I stopped being included in the starting lineup.
[In locker room other players leave him alone]
Also, the financial crisis began, and real estate prices fell drastically. I panicked; I didn’t know what to do. And I started to think about the meaning of life: ‘What really is the meaning of life? ‘If it’s not a career, not money, then what is it?’
[Flips through Bible]
And then I remembered everything that I learned about Jehovah when I was a teenager. I began to study the Bible again along with my wife.
[Looks in the open Bible]
After a year, I started preaching again, and in 2009, I was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
[Puts on suit and tie]
And this brought me so much joy and satisfaction. These feelings can’t be compared to winning any medal or cup.
[Walks in front of soccer field]
I realized that I couldn’t slave for two masters, but I still had to play two more years for Dynamo Kyiv. Although it was a difficult time, I took advantage of this opportunity, and I am thankful to Jehovah that a good witness was given about his name.
[Shows teammate a scripture]
There were some soccer players who showed interest in the truth. In 2011 when my contract ended, I finished my professional career.
[Looking straight ahead he exits the stadium]
First Timothy chapter 6 encourages us to place [our] hope, not on uncertain riches, but on God, and to be rich in fine works.
[Visits with friends in the Kingdom Hall]
People ask me: Do you regret it? Maybe you’d like to come back
[with friends]
do you miss soccer?
[He heads the ball]
And I honestly and sincerely say no.
[They laugh and smile]
I don’t miss it, and I don’t want to go back because my relationship with Jehovah, Well, it can’t be compared to anything.
[He preaches to a man in the street]
Everything that this world offers is all short-lived, and it’s only an illusion. People see only one side of the picture
[Spotlight]
—the fame and the money.
[Dancing in the club]
The other side are the injuries and disappointments.

It’s very hard psychologically and emotionally

you have no freedom. That’s why it’s better to give the very best to the One who appreciates it. What you do for Jehovah will always bring you happiness, joy, and satisfaction.

Although the athlete in the video loved playing soccer, why did he leave that career?
He decided to dedicate himself, not to soccer, but to Jehovah. Do you think he made the right decision? Why?
Before the apostle Paul became a Christian, he was pursuing a prominent career. He had studied Jewish law with a famous teacher. But he left that behind in order to become a Christian. Did Paul have any regrets? Read Philippians 3:8, and then discuss the questions that follow:
[Read scripture] Philippians 3:8: What is more, I do indeed also consider all things to be loss on account of the excelling value of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have taken the loss of all things and I consider them as a lot of refuse, that I may gain Christ [End of Read scripture]
Why did Paul say that what he did before he became a Christian was “a lot of refuse,” or garbage?
What did he gain instead?
How would you compare serving Jehovah to any other way you could use your life?
