INSTRUCTIONS and NAVIGATING FEATURES for the Bible Library Thumb Drive (BLTD) using an NLS model D A 1 digital player. 10 minutes)
Every time the player starts it will open in file jump. Pro-Tip: To skip the NLS instructions and go directly to the beginning introduction of the Bible, press the right arrow once.
Important notes unique to this cartridge and USB thumb drive.
When using either the cartridge or the BLTD USB thumb drive, insert either before turning the NLS player on. Each time the player is turned on, a series of beeps will be heard as the files are downloaded onto the NLS player. Do not pull out the cartridge or thumb drive until the player is turned off, or they may be damaged.
These cartridges or thumb drives change the ‘navigation menu prompts’, from the normal menu choice selections heard with a standard NLS Library cartridge, to other word prompt selections.
Note: To follow instructions with the player, keep the handle of the player, the front toward your body and the back of the player with the electric cord plug away from your body. The 2-inch by 4-inch blue cartridge is inserted directly into the middle of the front of the player, above the handle and can only be inserted one way. However, if you have a USB thumb drive, it is more difficult to find the USB port and correctly insert the thumb drive. Therefore, when using a thumb drive, to better locate the port push in the handle, as when then handle is pulled out, it creates a groove which can be mistaken for the USB port.
The following are detailed instructions to use the thumb drive in the NLS machine, model DA1, the advanced Digital Talking book Player.
These instructions explain how using this Bible Library cartridge or thumb drive with model DA1, differs from playing a standard NLS Library of Congress book.
1. Using the NLS player, pull out the plug which covers the USB port. This is located along the right side of the player, just above the headphone jack, and above the end of the closed pull-out handle.
2. Place the thumb drive into the open port, make sure it is not forced in upside down, then, turn on the player.
3. As the files begin to load, a series of audio beeps will be heard.
4. With the handle facing you, press the square, green play button, located on the top of the player near the front edge. Pressing this button starts and pauses the reading.
5. On model D A 1, there are four extra keys located right below the round raised speaker. A horizontal navigation ‘menu’ bar, with a raised horizontal line across the bar. Repeatedly pressing this 1-inch bar will allow you to stop at your chosen element or prompt, which then enables you to easily navigate book to book and chapter to chapter.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This menu feature is ONLY on model D A 1 (the advanced player). Model D S 1 (the standard player) does not have the horizontal menu navigation bar, the left and right arrow buttons below the speaker circle, or a bookmark button below the speed down button.
The standard model (D S 1) can be changed for the advanced model (D A 1), by calling (888) NLS READ (or 888) 657-7323. Ask for a DA1 player, so that you may navigate books and add bookmarks. They will exchange it for model DA1, which is the advanced player with navigational and bookmarking keys. Being able to navigate the library is quite simple with these buttons, but exceedingly difficult and time consuming with the standard DS1 player.
Consequently, with the DA1 player and this cartridge or USB thumb drive, it is most important to understand instead of hearing the four normal NLS cartridge menu prompts of Book jump, Chapter jump, Phrase jump and Bookmark jump, a thumb drive changes two of these prompt names. Book jump is now called Folder jump, and Chapter Jump is now called File jump. These four prompts are announced in a continuous circle. When the player turns on or reboots, it always begins at FILE jump, then Folder jump, Phrase jump, then Bookmark jump and back to the beginning, File jump. Therefore, to navigate between these options, keep pressing the horizontal menu button below the speaker, then lift your finger when the desired prompt or element needed is heard.
Once on the desired Folder (which is what books are called), to navigate between Chapters of that book, keep pressing the menu bar until the prompt is heard, File jump (which is what chapters are called). Then, to navigate forward one chapter or book, press the right arrow (next) button one time.
How to quickly navigate past other books or other chapters?
Once the chosen element on the menu bar is heard, by hitting the previous item button, which is the triangle facing to the left of the horizontal menu bar, or the next item button, which is the triangle button facing to the right of the menu bar, you can navigate one item or element at a time by pressing these buttons one time.
To quickly jump five books or chapters at a time, “HOLD DOWN” the triangle previous or next button, and the player will audibly announce the jump element by increments of five.
For example, when on folder jump, if you press either triangular button only once, it will move either ahead, or back, only one Bible book or one publication at a time. Likewise, when on file jump, it will move forward or back one chapter within a publication or one song at a time. The same applies to phrase jump, which is rarely used, or bookmark jump.
Pro tip: When you get to, “Folder 40”, which will be the first book of the Gospel, Matthew, it would be a clever idea to manually insert a bookmark. This is a quick way to go to the Greek Scriptures or the New Testament. When using bookmark jump, then, Matthew will automatically be announced as Folder 40, and whatever bookmark you have set. Inserting a bookmark at the beginning of each book is a quick navigation hint. There is not any limit to bookmark numbers that may be added or removed.
The bookmark button is located at the top right side of the player just below the speed down button and has a raised vertical line down the center of the button. After the bookmark button is pressed, as you lift your finger, the player will then say, “Bookmark Inserted”. Each bookmark will be given its own number, however, if you add bookmarks between items, the bookmark number automatically changes.
Important: To remove a bookmark, first listen for the bookmark number you need removed. Use the next or previous key to navigate to that number. As soon as you hear the bookmark number to be removed, immediately press pause. Then, once again, press the bookmark key and you will hear, “Bookmark Removed”. Please note, it does not say which number has been removed, but your bookmark numbers will have changed. (Caution: If you do not pause it, the announcement will continue telling you the location and instantly begin playing the book. At that point, if you hit the bookmark key, and hear ‘bookmark inserted’, numerous bookmarks may be unintentionally added. Immediately hit the bookmark key again, until ‘bookmark removed’ is heard.)
Using this same bookmark method, if bookmark 1 is inserted at Genesis chapter 1, bookmark 2 may be inserted at folder 40, which is Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, or Christian Greek Scriptures.
The next bookmark could be inserted at the beginning of the library section, which is folder 67 the book, Enjoy Life Forever.
(There is no bookmark limit, so they can be added to any favorite book, song, drama, section, or item within the library.)
Please note, if you have an Amazon Alexa / Echo digital assistant, the entire Bible as well as some of these publications may be accessed just by saying, “ALEXA, enable JW.org skill”. An exciting feature of the Alexa JW.org skill, is that now, you can go directly to a specific Bible verse, by simply using the voice command, “Alexa, ask JW.org to go to… (then name the Bible book, saying the words, chapter, and verse)”. To hear Christian music use the voice command, “Alexa, ask JW.org to play music.”
(All publications have been created and produced by Watchtower Bible and Tract Society; however, some audio description has been added by independent blind and sighted volunteers to assist those who are blind or have low vision.)
